Interview Preparation Advice

Your Prep

  • Prepare an uptodate professionally typed CV custom-built for the business to leave with the interview panel.
  • Have someone with a critical eye proof the CV.
  • Create interview answers to classic questions about yourself (review your strengths and weaknesses).
  • Acquire permission beforehand from individuals you designate to employ as reference.
  • Read about the area in which the placement is located.
  • Understand a bit about the company, what they do, their challenges and future plans (annual reports, organizational charts, policies and procedures, staff manual, and position description of the job being interviewed for).

Preparing a Good resume

A CV is your sales pitch to the position screening out committee, and it must construct a statement that shows you and what you are. Since there is no standard way to prepare a resume, your resume must be able to indicate what you can do for the business and show your overall readiness for the business. A resume should contain the following pieces of information but it need not be in the order given:

  • Your name, address, and telephone number(s).
  • Your employment objective objective. Signal the class of job you are seeking. The objective should be applicable to the position you are looking for.
  • Education: school name and location, graduation date or dates of attendance, degree obtained or highest grade completed.
  • Experience: indicate position title, name and address of company, dates of employment, and description of post responsibilities.
  • Special skills possessed: computer skills, languages, awards received, any achievement that is worth mentioning etc.
  • Indicate accessibility of references (usually upon request).

Prepare for the Day of the Interview

  • Dress for the business.
  • Be conservative but not prudish.
  • Be acceptable. Check for missing buttons, dragging hems, soiled clothes, etc.
  • Avoid jingling jewellery or “super trendy” fashion.
  • Look fresh and rested, interested and vigilant.
  • Arrive promptly for your interview.
  • Take with you ID (social security card, drivers license).

Your Behavior During the Interview or the Selling Game

  • Be convinced over your qualifications.
  • Avoid faultfinding observations about past jobs or bosses.
  • Determine the names of the interview panel members and their positioning within the company.
  • Show areas of the job to which you can apply historic experience and training.
  • Be creative in describing your skills and relating them to a new post.

Note that the business wants replies to the following questions:

  • Why are you here?
  • What will you do for the company (special skills, background)?
  • How much would it cost to employ you?

The Curtain Call or Closing the Deal

Send Off a follow-up letter thanking the interview panel members for their time and interest in you. Restate your desire for the business and the establishment.
