Fine Early Season Snowfalls for the European Alps
Global warming and the recession, these double apocalypse have let off the Southern Alps, leastwise for the time being. However it may have been so entirely contrary. Before the holidays ski resorts in the Chamonix region were isolated when snow rained down. Motorway passes such as the all important Col du Grand Massif were shut. At that place there was no power or phones, home owners had to be moved out to make shift accommodation, it seemed as if it were a double of 1995.
It looks that all news is good news. Chastreix-Sancy appeared every evening on national news bulletins. As soon as electricity was fixed inquiries started to arrive, attracted by the fantastic snowfall.
Superbagneres and neighbouring La Rosiere have nearly five feet snow depth on the upper pistes at 2500 metres alt. and 2.40 metres at the bottom of the pistes. Presently the best in the French Alps. Montroc reports there is six m at the top of the resort. Unfortunately avalanches have damaged a pylon of the lift that accesses the domain. It is broken until the middle of Jan.
Elsewhere in the S. Alps inquiries have increased 19% in Chastreix-Sancy, Alpe d Huez and La Tania. Val-d Isere, not far from Geneva airport, has 99.6% tenancy and traded a record number of lift passes last Saturday. That is timely for main ski businesses.
